3-0 Victory Over Storm Gives SVSU Volleyball Ohio Weekend Sweep

PAINESVILLE, Ohio - Coming on the heels of a sweep over Ashland University on Friday night, the Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team added another sweep over a GLIAC South opponent with a 3-0 decision over the Lake Erie College Storm on Saturday afternoon (10/11).

SVSU came out and grabbed a quick 1-0 lead after defeating the Lake Erie by a 26-24 score in the opening set.  The Cardinals would continue and claim the second frame by a score of 25-12 after hitting .423 and closed things out with a .353 hitting percentage and 25-13 win in the final set.

The victory improved Saginaw Valley to 10-6 overall on the season and 7-4 in the GLIAC.  Lake Erie falls to 2-15 overall and 0-11 in league play.

Kaylee Schmitt had a tremendous performance offensively for Saginaw Valley.  The sophomore middle hitter racked-up 12 kills and a .733 hitting percentage against the Storm.  She added four blocks to her credit while being named the Chili's "Player of the Match."

Kelsey Ferla added double-digit kills with 11 and added equally as many digs with 11.  She had three blocks defensively as well.

Makenzie Frodle chipped-in with seven kills (.467) and had four blocks in the match.  Kelly Vellucci had 32 assists while setting up her teammates for an overall hitting percentage of .337.

SVSU had 20 blocks compared to just a pair for the Storm, as the Cards are second in the league in total blocks (138).

"Our serve receive was solid today and Kelly did a nice job of getting our middle hitters involved," said Head Coach Will Stanton.  "Our offense was then pretty consistent and that helped our blocking pick up in sets two and three."  

Saginaw Valley returns to action on Friday and Saturday, when it travels to the annual GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament in Aurora, Illinois.  The Cardinals' opponents are yet to be determined, as final standings from both conferences need to be finalized for seeding purposes.
