Cards Post 3-1 Victory At Lake Superior State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - SVSU's volleyball team traveled to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan today (Oct 1) for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matchup with the Lake Superior State University Lakers.  

The Cardinals claimed the first two sets of the match, winning the opener by a 25-21 count before taking a 2-0 lead with a 25-19 victory in set number two.  LSSU pushed the match to four sets with a 25-20 win in the third before Saginaw Valley closed-out for the 3-1 win after a huge 25-12 win in the fourth and final set.

Junior Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) led the Cardinals on the offensive side, posting 11 kills while hitting for a .474 percentage and adding three blocks while earning Chili's "Player of the Match" honors.

Junior Ashley Driscoll (Bellevue, Mich./Pennfield HS) added eight kills, hitting at a .412 clip while fellow junior Kelsey Ferla (Lincoln Park, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) had 11 kills, five digs and four blocks.

Redshirt freshman Kelly Vellucci (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) had 25 assists for SVSU and junior Kate Czopek (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights HS) posted a game-high 19 digs.

Freshman Kaylee Schmitt (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) had a match-high five blocks in the victory.

Saginaw Valley (7-6, 2-3 GLIAC) is back in action this weekend, as it travels to face Lake Erie (10/4) and Ashland (10/5) in a swing through the state of Ohio.  The matches are set to begin at 7 pm and 2 pm, respectively.
