Lady Cardinals Compete in 'The Cardinal'

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's track and field team hosted "The Cardinal" Friday afternoon (Jan. 31), held in SVSU's O'Neill Arena.

Starting Saginaw Valley off in the distance medley was the team of Tori Peet, Dayle Micale, Ola Hendler, and Chantelle Fondren who were able to place fourth in the finals with a time of 12:40.41.

Kim Balls ran well for the Cardinals in the 60 meter dash, managing a 3rd place finished in 8.02.

Placing first place in the 1 mile run was junior Emily Short, crossing the finish line in a time of 5:00.04 with teammate Fondren close behind in fifth with a time of 5:07.48.  Short and Fondren also placed well in the 800 meter run, with Short picking up another first place victory with a time of 2:21.24 and Fondren this time in third at 2:24.91.

Also picking up a first place finish for Saginaw Valley was the team of Hendler, Balls, Bria Williams, and Diamond Taylor in the 4X400 meter relay.  The team managed the top spot in a time of 4:04.94.

The Cardinals fared well in the triple jump event; Anna Fochesato taking second place with a 10.98 meter jump and Lauren Little placing third with a leap of 10.40 meters.

Emerald Joiner and Meg Goettsch had a good day in both the weight throw and shot put.  Joiner was able to take first in both events, tossing 14.13 meters in shot put and 16.74 meters in weight throw.  Goettsch threw 12.26 meters in shot put, good for a third place finish and 15.62 meters in weight throw, placing her second.

Fochesato was also able to pick up a first place finish in high jump, reaching a height of 1.68 meters.

The Cardinals will return to action next Friday (Feb. 7) when they travel to Hillsdale, Mich. to compete in the Hillsdale College Invite.
