Cardinals Compete at SVSU Hosted 'Doug Hansen' Open

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams hosted the SVSU 'Doug Hansen' Open tonight (Jan. 11). The meet was unscored and consisted of teams from Saginaw Valley, Hillsdale, Wayne State and Marygrove.

Women

On the women's side, Lauren Hill (Flat Rock, Mich.) finished in first place in the mile with a time of 5:09.19, while Kimberly Balls (Bridgeport, Mich.) got the win in the 60 meter dash with a mark of 8.13 seconds. Shavonne Roberson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) ran well in the 400 meter run to cross the line at 1:02.01 and in first place along with Taylor Stepanski (Alpena, Mich.) who was the top finisher in the 800 meter run at 2:17.43. 

The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Taylor Stepanski, Diamond Taylor (Southfield, Mich.), Ola Hendler (Lansing, Mich. / Grand Ledge HS) and Shavonne Roberson picked up the victory for SVSU finishing in 4:04.64. Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich.) also earned the top prize in the high jump as she cleared 5 feet 2 1/2 inches".

Emerald Joiner (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill HS) made a solid toss in the weight throw competition as she finished in second place with a mark of 52 feet 1 3/4 inches.

Meanwhile, Hillsdale's Kayla Caldwell broke the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena record in the pole vault with a height of 13 feet 1 1/2 inches.

Men

For the SVSU men, David Ray (Lansing, Mich. / Eastern HS) posted a fine mark of 8.30 seconds to win the 60 meter hurdles, while Lee Chiatalas (Fenton, Mich. / Linden HS) crossed the line in 51.21 to finish first in the 400 meter dash. Raetron Bryant (Burton, Mich. / Atherton HS) and Ricky Griffin (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer HS) finished first and second in the 200 meter dash with times of 23.21 and 23.52, respectively.

Tyler Grob (Pinckney, Mich.) posted victories in both the long jump (20 feet 3 3/4 inches) and pole vault competitions (15 feet 1 inch), as well as a second place finish as part of his 4x400 meter relay team consisting of Grob, Bryant, Chiatalas and Ray. 

Travis Toye (Davison, Mich.) finished runner-up in the mile with time of 4:25.54, while Joseph Burelle (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson HS) notched also took runner-up honors in the 3k run as he finished in 8:53.57. 

The Cardinals will be back in action again at home next Friday (Jan. 18) for the SVSU Indoor Classic. Field events start at 3PM with running events beginning at 4PM.
