Willford Earns First Place at Lyle Bennett Open

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams competed Saturday (4/28) in the CMU hosted Lyle Bennett Open.  

The Lady Cardinals competed well and were led by senior Elizabeth Willford (Gladwin, Mich./Gladwin HS) who placed first in the pole vault competition clearing a height of 3.50 meters.  Also placing first for Saginaw Valley were teammates Alycia Wright (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North HS) and Lauren Hill (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock HS), Wright in the 800-meter run timing in at 2:12.18 and Hill in the 3,000-meter steeplechase coming in at 11:16.45.  Freshman Amanda Paris (Hemlock, Mich./Hemlock HS) would earn a second place finish in the 1,500-meter run clocking in at 4:54.29 while senior Kayleigh Nelson (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling HS) placed fourth in the hammer throw recording a mark of 45.79 meters.

The men's team was led by the 4x100-meter relay team that consisted of Ricky Griffin (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS), David Foster (Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron HS), Lee Chiatalas (Fenton, Mich./Linden HS) and Eric Osley (St. Clair Shores, Mich./South Lake HS)and crossed the line at 43.4, good for a third place finish.  Also placing third for the Cardinals was sophomore Chad Scott (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern HS) who clocked in at 10:11.34 for the 3,000-meter steeplechase.  Earning fourth place finishes for Saginaw Valley were teammates Drew Meylan (Bay City, Mich./Bay City Western HS) and Raetron Bryant (Burton, Mich./Atherton HS), Meylan in the 1,500-meter run timing in at 4:12.37 and Bryant in the triple jump recording a distance of 13.05 meters.  

The Cardinals will be back in action again next week (5/2-4) when they compete in the Outdoor Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Track and Field Championships.
