Wright Earns First Place Finish at the MSU Spartan Invite

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams competed Saturday (4/7) in the MSU Spartan Invitational. 

The women's team was led by seniors Alycia Wright (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North HS) and Megan Pittoors (Macomb, Mich./Dakota HS) who placed first and second in the 5,000-meter run clocking in at 17:35.68 and 17:36.22, respectively.  With those times the seniors were both just 30 seconds shy of setting a new school record.  Another senior that had an exceptional performance was Lauren Hill (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock HS) who placed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and timed in at 11:29.06, just 20 seconds short of setting a new school record.  The 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams both placed fifth crossing the line with times of 49.91 and 4:04.95, respectively.

The men's team was led by senior Jon Wetters (Essexville, Mich./Garber HS) who placed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase crossing the line with a final time of 9:25.48.  Fellow distance runner Joseph Burelle (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson HS) recorded a 15:02.57 in the 5,000-meter run which was also good for a fourth place finish.  Freshman Drew Meylan (Bay City, Mich./Bay City Western HS) also earned a fourth place finish for the Cardinals clocking in at 1:53.72 for the 800-meter run.  The 4x100-meter relay team would earn a fifth place finish coming in at 43.18 while the 4x400-meter relay team placed fourth timing in at 3:22.44.

The Cardinals will be back in action again Saturday (4/14) when they travel to Midland, Mich. to compete in the Northwood Open.
