
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Saginaw Valley State University track and field team had seven athletes, four men and three women, earn Division II All-Region awards for the 2011 outdoor season.
The athletes that earned All-Region honors were chosen by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and were based on their performances at the outdoor Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Juniors Elizabeth Willford (Gladwin, Mich./Gladwin HS) and Alycia Wright (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North HS) were named All-Region for their top finishes at the outdoor GLIAC Championships, Willford in the pole vault and Wright in the 800-meter run. Willford placed tied for fourth place with a vault of 3.57meters while Wright placed sixth overall finishing with a final time of 2:12.70. Freshman Samantha Cormier (Frankenmuth, Mich./Frankenmuth HS) would garner the third All-Region spot for SVSU in the javelin throw. Cormier placed seventh overall at the outdoor GLIAC Championships tossing the javelin a distance of 33.76meters.
For the men, seniors Derek Stone (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer East HS) and Cortland Seaver (Freeland, Mich./Freeland HS) earned All-Region honors, Stone in the 1,500-meter run and Seaver in the 10,000-meter run. Stone placed third in the 1,500-meter run clocking in at 3:52.72 while Seaver placed second in the 10,000-meter run crossing the line at 30:59.36. Sophomore Tyler Grob (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) would earn his honors by winning the decathlon at the outdoor GLIAC Championships scoring a total of 6,683 points. David Ray (Lansing, Mich./Eastern High School) gained his honors by placing second in the 110-meter hurdles finishing with a final time of 14.69
