Saginaw Valley Hosts the First Annual SVSU vs. GVSU Dual Meet

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams hosted the first annual dual meet against cross state rivals Grand Valley State University.

The Cardinals were overmatched and defeated, the men 84-48 and the women 90-48.  Both teams also raised money throughout the week to see which team could raise the most money to go towards a charity of their choice.  Saginaw Valley raised just over $500 while Grand Valley raised over $1,000 winning the charity competition, as well as the meet. 

The women's team was led by distance runners Lauren Hill (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock HS) and Jean Hollerbach (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South HS) who placed first and second in the 3,000-meter run clocking in at 10:31.45 and 10:38.67, respectively.  Alycia Wright (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North HS) also earned a first place finish in the 800-meter run crossing the line with a final time of 2:16.67.  Junior Ashley Meyer (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd HS) would place second in the mile crossing the line with a time of 5:16.25 while teammate Angela Brooks (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon HS) also placed second in the long jump with a distance of 5.03meters. 

The men's team was led by senior distance runners Steve Genther (Laingsburg, Mich./Laingsburg HS) and Jeff Wilson (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon HS) who placed first and second in the 3,000-meter run coming in at 8:32.79 and 8:48.54, respectively.  David Ray would take first in the 60-meter hurdles clocking in with a final time of 8.20, while teammate Raetron Bryant (Burton, Mich./Artherton HS) earned a second place finish in the 60-meter dash crossing the line at 7.18.  Freshman Lee Chiatalas (Fenton, Mich./Linden HS) would also earn a second place finish in the 400-meter dash finishing with a time of 50.99.  Frank Sanders (Detroit, Mich./Sterling Heights HS) finished tied for first place in the high jump with a leap of 1.98meters.  The 4x400-meter relay team consisting of Tyler Grob (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS), David Ray, Ryan Renas (Warren, Mich./Warren Woods Tower HS), and Justin Walker (Clio, Mich./Birch Run HS) would round out the meet with a first place finish clocking in at 3:29.78.

The Cardinals will be back in action again Friday (Feb. 11) and Saturday (Feb. 12) as they travel to Grand Valley State University to compete in the Big Meet.
