Ashland escapes with 4-3 over SVSU

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team was narrowly topped by Ashland University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup Saturday in Ashland, Ohio.

The Cardinals fell 4-3 to the Eagles, dropping to 4-10 overall and 2-6 in the GLIAC.

After being swept in the doubles matches and falling behind 1-0, Emma Charlton got SVSU on the board with a dominant win at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1.

Nicole Johnson put the Cardinals up 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles, while the Eagles won at No. 1 and No. 3 singles to move in front 3-2 with two matches remaining on the court.

Adiya Young tied the score for SVSU with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles. The match came down to No. 4 singles. Gyselle Daza Gutierrez battled to a third set before falling 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

The Cardinals close the 2021 regular season against Ferris State University at 3 pm Tuesday at the Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.
