Cardinals defeat Ashland in second round of GLIAC Tournament, 4-1

MIDLAND -- After dropping a match in the 2019 GLIAC opener to Michigan Tech on Friday night, the SVSU Women's Tennis team bounced back in a big way on Saturday, defeating Ashland by a score of 4-1 at the Greater Midland Tennis Center. 

The Cardinals claimed two of the three doubles matchups, taking the doubles point for a 1-0 lead heading into singles action. Maddie Miller and Taylor McLaughlin teamed-up for a stellar 6-2 win at the top spot while Gyselle Daza Gutierrez and Joanne Gao grinded out a 7-6 win in a tiebreaker (7-3) to seal the point as Ashland won at #3 doubles, 6-2. 

Miller posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory at #1 singles for the Cards while Gutierrez registered a 6-3, 6-3 win at her #4 singles spot. Nicole Johnson was victorious for Saginaw Valley at #6 singles, helping clinch the 4-1 team victory over the Eagles.

SVSU faces Ferris State on Sunday (Oct. 27) morning in the final round of the annual postseason league tournament. The first serve will be at 9:00 a.m. from the Greater Midland Tennis Center.
