Women's Tennis drops 5-2 matchup to Northwood in home action

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal Women's Tennis team hosted Northwood University on Sunday (Oct. 20) afternoon in what was the final regular season match of the fall season and senior day for the Cards. The Timberwolves were able to come out in front in the end, taking the doubles point and claiming victory in four singles matchups for a 5-2 win.

Doubles

The lone victory for the Cards came in a tight matchup at #2 doubles. Joanne Gao and Gyselle Daza Gutierrez would grind-out a victory in the end, however, defeating their opponents by a 7-6 score. Northwood got wins at the #1 and #3 positions though, as Maddie Miller and Taylor McLaughlin fell 6-2 at the top spot while Nicole Johnson and Adiya Young dropped their math by a 6-4 count. 

Singles

Miller bounced back for a 6-2, 6-4 win at #1 singles in her final regular season match at the SVSU Tennis Complex to give the Cards a point. The other point for Saginaw Valley in singles action came at #6, where Johnson battled and claimed a three-set victory 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-4. Gutierrez, also playing in her final regular season match at home, had a three-set thirller as well. She won the opener 6-2 before dropping the next two 3-6, 4-6. Gao fell 6-3, 6-4 at #2 while senior McLaughlin dropped her match at #3 6-1, 6-1. Sara Neves competed at #5 as well, falling 6-2, 7-5 to her opponent. 

Up Next...

Saginaw Valley returns to the court on Friday (Oct. 25) for the 2019 GLIAC Tournament, which is set to take place in Midland at the Greater Midland Tennis Center. The Cardinals enter this year's tournament as the #6 seed and will face #3 seeded Michigan Tech at 6:45 p.m. The Huskies won the earlier matchup this season, taking a 6-1 victory over SVSU on Oct. 6 in Houghton.
