SVSU falls to LSSU by narrow 4-3 count in road action

SAULT STE. MARIE -- The SVSU Women's Tennis team hit the road this weekend for a pair of GLIAC matches in the Upper Peninsula, beginning with a Saturday (Oct. 5) morning contest at Lake Superior State University. Despite a strong doubles performance and some solid singles play, the Cardinals were defeated by the Lakers, 4-3. 

Doubles

Joanne Gao and Gyselle Daza Gutierrez teamed-up for a stellar 6-2 win the #2 doubles slot while Adiya Young and Nicole Johnson added a 6-1 #3 doubles win to give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead after the doubles victory. Maddie Miller and Taylor McLaughlin competed at the #1 spot, falling by a 6-3 score.

Singles

The two victories for Saginaw Valley in singles action came at the #5 and #6 spots. Sara Neves was victorious at the #5 position 6-0, 6-4 and Nicole Johnson won 6-1, 6-0 for another decisive win at the #6 slot. 

McLaughlin fell in three sets at her #3 singles spot, dropping the first set 7-6 (7) before bouncing back for a 6-2 win in the second set to knot it at 1-1. She fought in the third frame but eventually fell 6-4. Gutierrez had another three-set contest for the Cards, taking her first 6-0 before falling in the next two 6-2, 6-3. 

The Lakers won their #1 and #2 singles contests as well, sealing the 4-3 win in the Saturday match.

The Cardinals continue at Michigan Tech on Sunday (Oct. 6), facing the Huskies in a 10:00 a.m. match. The Huskies are coming off a 5-2 victory over Northwood on Saturday.
