Women's Tennis battles, drops league match at Northwood

MIDLAND -- The Cardinal Women's Tennis team traveled to play at Northwood University in a league match on Saturday (Oct. 13) morning. In a contest that featured several close matchups, the Timberwolves eventually came out on top by a 7-0 score.

SVSU falls to 4-3 overall on the season and in the GLIAC while Northwood is now 7-0 overall and in league action.

Doubles

There were a pair of very close matches in doubles play, as the #1 duo of Maddie Miller and Gyselle Daza Gutierrez lost by a narrow 7-6 score while Taylor McLaughlin and Nicole Johnson dropped a narrow 7-5 decision at the #3 spot. At #2 doubles, Joanne Gao and Maya Campbell fell by a 6-2 margin.

Singles

The Cardinals had a pair of three-set matches in singles action. At the top spot, Miller took the first set by a 6-3 count before falling in the next two by scores of 4-6, 3-6. In the #6 singles position, Johnson claimed her first set 7-6 but dropped the next two 2-6, 6-10.

Joanna Gao lost her matchup at the #2 spot 2-6, 5-7 while Gutierrez fell 2-6, 4-6 at #5. McLaughlin lost her #3 match 2-6, 2-6 while Campbell fell 2-6, 3-6 at #4.

From Head Coach Jenn Boehm...

"The team score was truly not reflective of our performances today. We played hard and pushed this Northwood team on every court. We just came up a little short in the closest matches. I was really happy with how we handled the pressure and fought for every point.

Doubles was a highlight with the #1 and #3 teams coming within a few points of turning things out way. They all played smart and with great energy which is what we need to play our best.

Maddie played a phenomenal match at the #1 singles position and I have been especially proud of how she has handled the challenges of the top spot. Nicole also fought to a 3rd set tiebreaker at #6 which will only make her tougher moving forward.

We look forward to playing at home for our final matches next weekend and hope to have a big crowd to create that home court advantage."
