MIDLAND -- The SVSU Women's Tennis team defeated the Lake Superior State University Lakers on Sunday afternoon by a score of 4-3 in a GLIAC matchup.
The Cardinals dropped the doubles point, falling at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions by 6-4 scores despite the No. 2 team of Joanne Gao and Maya Campbell defeating their opponents.
In singles action, SVSU would take four of the six matches to nab the narrow victory.
The home team dropped the first two spots at No. 1 and No. 2 singles in three-set contests, as Maddie Miller and Gao fell by scores of 6-1, 2-6, 4-6 and 3-6, 6-2, 5-7, respectively.
The Cardinals would prove to be too much to handle in the other matchups, leading the team to the victory.
Taylor McLaughlin got a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot and Campbell followed suit at the No. 4 spot with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Gyselle Daza Gutierrez had a nice win at No. 5 singles with a score of 6-1, 6-4 to pull the count to even 3-3.
Freshman Nicole Johnson had the clinching point for Saginaw Valley, securing the victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 6 singles position.
From Head Coach Jenn Boehm...
"I was extremely proud of our team today. Overall it was our best performance this season. We lost the doubles point after a great battle on all 3 courts. Joanne and Maya once again came up with a great finish to remain undefeated in the GLIAC at 2 doubles.
SVSU hits the road for a pair of GLIAC contests, playing at Wayne State Saturday (Oct. 6) and Ashland on Sunday. Stay tuned to www.svsucardinals.com for full details.
