Women's Tennis moves to 2-0 after 6-1 win at Davenport

CALEDONIA -- The Saginaw Valley State University Women's Tennis team posted its second consecutive victory to open the 2018-19 season, registering a 6-1 win at Davenport on Sunday. The Cardinals swept through the doubles for the first point in the match and continued to take five of six singles contests for the victory.

Doubles

The No. 1 duo of Maddie Miller and Gyselle Daza Gutierrez were victorious by a 6-2 count, as was the No. 3 team of Nicole Johnson and Taylor McLaughlin over their opponents. Maya Campbell and Joanne Gao claimed victory at the No. 2 spot as well, posting a 6-4 decision.

Singles

Miller cruised to her singles victory at the No. 1 spot, posting scores of 6-1, 6-0. Gao was victorious as well, claiming a win at No. 2 singles by scores of 7-6, 6-3. Gutierrez didn't drop a set in her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles while Johnson won at No. 6, 6-2, 6-1. McLaughlin won over her opponent at the No. 3 spot, 6-7, 6-4, 5-2 for the final SV point.

From Head Coach Jenn Boehm

"Prior to the start of the match today I challenged our team to bring a high level of energy from the first point played to the last. They did not disappoint. I was once again very impressed with our continued strength in doubles. To gain that doubles point has proven to give us great momentum going into singles.

In singles, we had some tough battles at the #2, 3, and 4 spots which was great experience for those players to grind and fight through their matches. Our two new players had a great day on the courts winning convincingly at 5 and 6. At the top of the lineup Maddie Miller continued her dominance only dropping one game in singles. Not only did she go 4-0 this weekend in the top singles and doubles positions, but she did it without letting her opponents get more than 2 games in any set. It was one of the best overall weekends of her career and it was fun to watch.

Now we'll get to work preparing for the upcoming home weekend vs Michigan Tech and LSSU. Both teams have had strong starts to their seasons as well so we need to continue to raise our level of discipline and energy to be successful. We hope everyone can come out to support us by creating a great home court environment on match day."
