Cardinals drop 5-4 decision to Rockhurst

ORLANDO -- The Cardinal Women's Tennis team continued its 2018 spring trip in Florida, facing the Rockhurst University Hawks in a regional mathup on Tuesday (Mar. 6) afternoon. Despite a 2-1 lead after doubles play, Saginaw Valley couldn't pull out ahead after singles action and would fall by a 5-4 final count. 

The No. 1 doubles duo of Shead Donahue and Maddie Miller were victorious in their match by a 9-7 count. They would be joined by Danielle Slonac and Joanne Gao, who claimed an 8-4 win in their No. 2 meeting. 

In singles play, the Cardinals ended up on the short end of three close three-set tiebreakers. At No. 1, Donahue fell by a score of 5-7, 6-2, 4-10 while Miller was setback 6-3, 5-7, 5-10 at the No. 2 spot. In No. 4 singles action, Taylor McLaughlin battled but was defeated by a count of 6-3, 2-6, 9-11. 

SVSU, however, was victorious at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions. Slonac breezed through her matchup at No. 5, winning 6-1, 6-2. Nikita Hill followed suit at the No. 6 slot, winning in tiebreaker fashion 2-6, 7-6 (4), 10-6. 

Saginaw Valley continues play Wednesday at Florida Tech, facing-off with the Panthers for a 2:00 p.m. match.
