Tennis claims spring trip opener versus Missouri Western, 7-2

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team put together a strong start to their spring break schedule, claiming a 7-2 victory over Missouri Western State University at Fort Gatlin Recreation Center in Orlando, Florida Monday morning.

The SVSU Cardinals swept doubles to claim the first three points. The no. 1 doubles team of Shea Donahue and Maddie Miller claimed an 8-0 win over their opponents. Joanne Gao and Taylor McLaughlin combined for an 8-5 victory and no. 2 doubles, and Nikita Hill and Danielle Slonac followed suit at no. 3 doubles, winning 8-3.

Singles play was quite competitive, with the top four matches splitting sets. Hill put the first singles point on the board, winning her first singles match as a Cardinal, 6-0, 6-0. Gao finished next to claim the decisive fifth point for SVSU, winning 6-4, 2-6, 12-10.

Donahue battled back to win her no. 1 singles match 2-6, 6-4, 10-4. Fellow senior Slonac won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.

Miller dropped a hard-fought match at no. 2 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 12-10, as did McLaughlin, who fell 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.

The Cardinals return to action Monday afternoon against Rollins College in a 4:00 p.m. matchup.
