BIG RAPIDS -- The Saginaw Valley State University Women's Tennis team claimed a victory at Ferris State University on Sunday, posting a 7-2 edge over the Bulldogs in Big Rapids, Michigan. The Cardinals swept doubles play to give the team a 3-0 lead heading into singles play and would take four of the singles matchups, claiming the victory.
Doubles
The Cardinals swept through doubles play, giving SV a commanding 3-0 edge heading into singles competition. The No. 2 doubles squad of Danielle Slonac and Madeline Miller began with an 8-4 win to give the visitors their first point. An 8-3 win at the No. 3 spot followed, as Joanne Gao and Maya Campbell pushed the lead to 2-0. Shea Donahue and Taylow McLaughlin made it 3-for-3, earning an 8-4 win at the top spot.
Singles
McLaughlin made quick work of her opponent at No. 4 singles, posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory to begin the scoring. Campbell followed suit, claiming the decisive fifth point for Saginaw Valley with her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles. Slonac was dominant in her match as well, winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
Donahue and Miller were next to finish, each dropping close three-set matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. Donahue fell by a score of 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 and Miller dropped her contest by a 7-6, 3-6, 10-8 count.
Gao was the last match out for the Cards, coming away victorious at the No. 3 position by a score of 6-4, 7-6.

The Cardinals face Tiffin University on Friday (Oct. 27) in the opening round of the 2017 GLIAC Tournament. First serve is set for 6:45 p.m. at the Greater Midland Tennis Center. Saginaw Valley defeated the Dragons by a 7-2 score back on Oct. 8. SVSU is the No. 4 seed in this year's tournament, the highest seed for the team in the tournament's existence.
