Saginaw Valley Drops 7-2 Decision to Northwood

MIDLAND -- In what was originally scheduled as the final home match for the Cardinals in 2017, the SVSU Women's Tennis team played Northwood in a match played at the Greater Midland Tennis Center due to poor weather conditions. The Timberwolves would claim the victory over the Cardinals by a score of 7-2. 

It was Senior Day for the Cardinals, as the team had an opportunity to honor both Shea Donahue and Danielle Slonac in a ceremony before play began. 

Doubles

The No. 3 Doubles duo of Joanne Gao and Maya Campbell were dominant while posting the team's only doubles victory. They claimed an 8-1 decision over their opponents, moving to an impressive 5-2 overall on the season. 

Singles

Taylor McLaughlin claimed the lone singles win for the Cards, as she was victorious at her No. 4 singles position. She dropped the first set by a 3-6 score before knotting the match with a 7-6 win in the second frame. She then claimed the win with a 10-8 third set tiebreaker victory. Maya Campbell lost in a tight three-set match as well. She took the opening set by a 7-5 count before falling in the second by a 2-6 margin. She then fell in the third set tiebreaker to her opponent, 10-5. Danielle Slonac fell in another close contest at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3. 

Up Next...

Saginaw Valley has a pair of road matches to round-out the fall 2017 regular season this upcoming weekend. The Cardinals play at Grand Valley State on Saturday (Oct. 21) at 1:00 p.m. before playing at Ferris State Sunday in a 10:00 a.m. match.
