University Center, Mich.— Playing at home for the second match in a row on Saturday (Oct. 7) in a GLIAC match up, the Saginaw Valley State University Women's Tennis team finished the day strong with an 8-1 victory over the Eagles. The Cards claimed two doubles match ups before taking all six singles contests, claiming the win. 

The win pushes SVSU's overall record to 5-1 on the 2017 season with a of 5-2 mark in the GLIAC.

Doubles

The No. 1 Doubles team of Shea Donahue and Taylor McLaughlin lost a very tight 9-8 match over their opponents. At No. 2 and No. 3 Doubles, Madeline Miller and Danielle Slonac gave an impressive 8-5 victory overt the Ashland No. 2 team and with Joanne Gao and Maya Campbell dominating performance in an 8-1 win over their Eagle opponents at the No. 3 slot to give the squad a 2-1 lead leading into singles competition.

Singles

Campbell disposed of her AU opponent quickly, finishing first with a 6-1, 6-1, win in the No. 6 spot to begin play. Her doubles partner, Gao, followed closely behind with a stellar 6-2, 6-4 win in the No. 3 postion.

McLaughlin claimed the third team point of the match with her 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 4 singles spot.

Senior Slonac grabbed another singles victory for the team, dominating the court with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 5. 

Donahue claimed a 6-2, 6-4 victory over the AU opponent at the No. 1 spot to begin singles play.

Miller rounded out the singles matches with great admiration, taking the victory 6-3, 7-6.

"Today was a special day for our program. We began the rainy morning with a memorial bench dedication ceremony for the late SVSU math professor Dora Nedeva. She was a fan and supporter of our team and would've been so very proud of how we competed today. The weather then cleared up just in time for us to be able to get this match in outdoors. After a tough loss yesterday, we knew we had to come out and play with a purpose today. Our goal of winning this conference is still very much alive and it showed in our fight and discipline today. We lost an incredibly tight number one doubles match, but when into doubles with the 2-1 lead thanks to strong performances at 2 & 3. We carried that confidence and momentum into the singles and played incredibly smart and tough tennis. I'm so very proud of this team and what we've been able to accomplish so far together. We look forward to another tough battle tomorrow with Tiffin."

Cardinals are back in action at the SVSU Tennis Complex against Tiffin University on Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. The Dragons are coming off of a 7-2 loss against Northwood Saturday afternoon.
