UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Hosting GLIAC newcomer Purdue Northwest on Saturday (Sep. 16) morning, the SVSU Women's Tennis team posted a stellar 9-0 sweep over the Pride at the SVSU Tennis Complex. The Cardinals claimed all three doubles matches before rolling that into going 6-for-6 in singles action for the victory.
Cardinal head coach Jenn Boehm spoke to how prepared the team was heading into the home GLIAC opener on Saturday...
"I can not think of a week of practice since I have been coaching here at SVSU where we have had such focused, purposeful and high energy sessions each and every day. The turnaround we saw as coaches from last week to this week was inspiring. These ladies were so well prepared and confident in their mission and they all stayed disciplined until the last point. I was especially proud of Taylor and Shea because they had a tough loss last week and they did a complete 180 degree flip in every way. It was like watching a different team with how they competed today."
SVSU claimed a quick victory at No. 3 doubles to start, as the freshman duo of Joanne Gao and Maya Campbell earned their second straight doubles win with an 8-0 showing. At the No. 2 spot, Danielle Slonac and Madeline Miller had a convincing victory as well, 8-3. Shea Donahue and Taylor McLaughlin found themselves in a battle at the top doubles spot, taking the final game after being down 0-40 to claim the 8-6 win.
Slonac disposed of her opponent by twin 6-0, 6-0 scores at No. 5 singles and she was followed by McLaughlin, who posted a quick 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 4 slot. Campbell overcame a tough matchup at No. 6 singles, claiming her first career victory at No. 6 singles by a 6-1, 6-2 score. Gao registered her first-ever college win as well, posting a 6-1, 6-2 showing at No. 3 singles. Donahue improved to 2-0 for the 2017 campaign at her new No. 1 singles spot, overcoming her opponent by a score of 6-1, 6-4. Miller slid up to the No. 2 spot for Saginaw Valley in the match. She outlasted her Pride opponent and claimed a 6-0, 6-4 win

"This was a huge day for us in singles. Not because of the scoreboard but because of the high standards we held ourselves to. We never let the little things get to us and we competed like champions. Since this was our first GLIAC match, that is a promising sign for this young team. We competed for each other and it showed. I could not feel more proud of not only the results, but the preparations that went into making it a reality. We cannot wait to get back on the court together and continue pushing upward with this team."
