HILLSDALE -- The SVSU Women's Tennis squad headed down to Hillsdale College on Sunday (Sep. 10) afternoon for the 2017 season opener and regional matchup. After dropping two of three doubles matches, the Cardinals claimed three of the singles spots but would fall in a tight match by a 5-4 count.

The lone victory for the Cards in the doubles spots came at No. 3, where freshmen Joanne Gao and Maya Campbell teamed up for a 9-7 victory over their Hillsdale opponents. The duo claimed five straight games to close-out for their first collegiate victories. Danielle Slonac and Madeline Miller had a close one at No. 2 as well, narrowly falling by an 8-5 score.

Singles

Shea Donahue had a huge victory at the No. 1 spot. She posted a decisive 6-1, 6-4 win over her regionally-ranked opponent.

Taylor McLaughlin was victorious at the No. 4 singles slot, besting her Charger opponent by a count of 6-4, 6-3.

The No. 5 spot saw Danielle Slonac coming away with a solid showing in her win. Slonac made quick work of her match with a scores of 6-1, 6-2.

Campbell fell in three sets to her opponent at the No. 6 spot 5-7, 6-0, 3-6 and Miller dropped her No. 3 match after falling in a 7-6 tiebreak first set and 6-3 count in the second.

From Head Coach Jenn Boehm

"Going into this match, of course we want to get the win, however it was much more a great barometer to show us where we are in comparison to where we know we can be. What we learned is we are tough, smart, and confident. We had three doubles teams that had never competed together and I thought we did a solid job of handling that. There is no doubt we will improve at all three spots."
