Women's Swimming & Diving Duo to Compete at National Championships

UNIVERSITY CENTER - A pair of Saginaw Valley State University swimming & diving student-athletes will be taking part in the festivities for the 2015 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships  This year's championships are being held at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis from March 11-14.

SVSU freshman swimmer Rebeca Martinez qualified and has officially been invited to participate, as she posted NCAA "B" qualifying times in the 200 Back, 200 IM, 400 IM and 500 Free.  Her time of 2:01.63 in the 200 Back was fast enough to get her invited to the championships and has her ranked 16th nationally in the event.  Martinez will compete in all four events in the meet.  She is the first swimmer in program history to achieve the NCAA qualifying times and the first to compete in the NCAA Championships.

Joining Martinez will be fellow freshman and diver, Kathleen Murphy.  Murphy has qualified to participate in the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships Dive-in competition on March 10th.  To qualify for this competition, a diver must have achieved a minimum qualifying score on either the one meter board or the three meter board during the regular season.  Katy achieved her qualifying score on the one meter board and will compete in that event in the Dive-in Meet against 31 other Division II divers from around the nation.  The top-22 divers from the Dive-in competition will then move on and compete in the actual NCAA Championships March 11-14.  Katy is the first diver in program history to achieve the qualifying score that will give her the opportunity to compete at the NCAA Championships.
