Martinez Posts 3rd Place Finish on Final Day of GLIAC Championships

JENISON - The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving team completed competition Saturday (Feb. 14) at the 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships at the Jenison Aquatics Center.  The Lady Cardinals had a total of 224 points which was good for eighth place in the program's inaugural conference championship meet.  SVSU had a total of six top-8 finishes as individuals over the four day event.  Wayne State claimed the team championship with a total of 820.5 points.

Rebeca Martinez posted a third place showing in the 200 yard backstroke finals with a time of 2:03.14 which set a new school record and was good enough for an NCAA championships B qualifying time.  Martinez was stellar over the four days, recording four top-8 finishes in her first ever GLIAC Championship meet.

Carley Buechner was impressive on the final day as well, posting a seventh place showing in the 200 yard breaststroke finals (2:26.04).  Buechner set a new school record in the preliminary rounds with a time of 2:24.67.

SVSU recorded several season-best times in the preliminary rounds of the morning session.  Chelsea Harmon (55.84) and Melanie Soenksen (56.35) eached touched in with season-best times in the 100 yard freestyle, while Shaked Bachar notched a best time of 2:13.41 in the 200 yard backstroke.

The duo of Erica Wysocki and Wilhelmina Francisco competed in the three-meter diving event.  Wysocki recorded a score of 324.00 while Francisco finished with a score of 327.25 off the three-meter board.

The 400 yard freestyle relay team finished in sixth place, posting a time of 3:40.08.

The final field for the 2015 NCAA National Championships will be set and the Cardinals await final qualifiers for the national meet.
