Martinez Posts Another Top-8 Finish in Day 2 of GLIAC Championships

JENISON - The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving team continued competition today (Feb. 12) at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Swimming & Diving Championships at the Jenison Aquatics Center in Jenison, Michigan.  The Lady Cardinals currently sit in eighth place after the second day of the championships with a total of 115 points.  Wayne State leads with 409 points.

Rebeca Martinez and Shaked Bachar both advanced to the finals round of the 400 yard IM.  Martinez recorded another top-eight finish as she finished with a time of 4:34.78.  Bachar posted a season-best mark of 4:44.93 in the B finals round which was good for 15th place.

Chelsea Harmon swam to season-best times in the preliminary rounds of the 100 yard butterfly (1:00.98) and the 200 yard freestyle (2:04.27).  Katelynn Franczak also posted a season-best time of 1:07.60 in the 100 yard butterfly event.

SVSU participated in a pair of relays on the second day of competition.  The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Harmon, Kaleigh Kovac, Breanne Bell, and Melanie Soenksen touched in at 1:40.48 which placed in seventh.  The 400 yard medley relay team of Bachar, Carley Buechner, Martinez, and Soenksen recorded a time of 3:59.18 in the race which was good for seventh place as well.

Wilhelmina Francisco advanced to the finals in the one-meter diving event.  She came in seventh place as she notched a score of 363.80 off the one-meter board.

Saginaw Valley is back in action tomorrow (Feb. 13) for the third day of the GLIAC Championship meet at the Jenison Aquatics Center.  The Lady Cardinals will compete in the prelims of the 500 yard freestyle, 100 yard backstroke, 100 yard breaststroke, and 200 yard butterfly beginning at 10:30 am.  The finals for those events and the 800 yard freestyle relay are slated to begin at 6:00 pm.
