Lady Cardinals Compete in Day 1 of GLIAC Championships

JENISON – The Saginaw Valley State University women's swimming and diving team completed day one of the program's first ever Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships at the Jenison Aquatics Center today (Feb. 11).  The Lady Cardinals finished the opening day with a total of 39 points which placed SVSU in ninth place.

Rebeca Martinez advanced to the finals of the 200 yard IM, after posting a preliminary time of 2:08.70.  The freshman finished in seventh place in the finals round with an NCAA B cut time of 2:07.90.

Melanie Soenksen competed in the consolation finals round in the 50 yard freestyle event.  She swam to a time of 25.02 which was good for 16th place.

The 200 yard medley relay team of Martinez, Carley Buechner, Chelsea Harmon, and Soenksen finished the race in sixth place, posting a time of 1:49.35.

Shaked Bachar (11:08.48), Buechner (11:17.97) and Katelynn Franczak (11:53.26) all swam in the preliminary round of the 1000 yard freestyle during the morning session.

Saginaw Valley will be back in action tomorrow (Feb. 12) for the second day of the 2015 GLIAC Championships.
