Women's Swimming & Diving Competes Against Hillsdale

UNIVERSITY CENTER – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving team returned to the pool for the first time since November 23, 2014 as it hosted Hillsdale College in a dual meet at the Gerstacker Regional Aquatic Center on Friday (Jan. 16) night.  The Lady Cardinals claimed six top spots in 14 swimming events.

Rebeca Martinez recorded three victories for the Cards.  The freshman posted a top finish in the 200 Yard Butterfly (2:11.55), 200 Yard Backstroke (2:09.39), and 400 Yard IM (4:43.47).

Freshman Carley Buechner recorded a pair of wins in the 100 Yard Breaststroke and 200 Yard Breaststroke.  Buechner finished the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:08.27 and the 200 Yard Breaststroke at 2:28.74. 

The final victory of the night came from the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team.  The team of Melanie Soenksen, Kaleigh Kovac, Chelsea Harmon, and Breanne Bell posted a time of 1:44.51 in the event which was about two seconds better than the second place team.

The SVSU trio of divers competed in the one-meter and three-meter diving events as well.  Wilhelmina Francisco finished first in the one-meter event with a score of 222.25.  Erica Wysocki finished in second place (214.65) while Kathleen Murphy scored 206.15 to take third.  Murphy, however, took the victory in the three-meter event finishing with a score of 225.20.  Wysocki (216.80) and Francisco (211.15) took second and third place, respectively. 

Saginaw Valley returns to action on Saturday, January 24th as it takes on Albion College in another dual meet.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm in Albion, Michigan.
