UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer program hosted their GLIAC Quarterfinal match against Purdue Northwest Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals (9-5-5, 6-3-5 GLIAC) won in extra time 1-0 against the Pride (7-7-5, 4-6-4 GLIAC).
Saginaw Valley outshot Purdue Northwest 28-10 with shots on goal being 11-2 in favor of SVSU. The Cardinals dominated the second half outshooting the Pride 16-2. Madi Bajis tied a career high in shots with six, doing it for the third time, and had two on target as Rileigh Garbarz had six shots as well, three on target for a career high. Kaley Douglass and Stephanie Strong both had four shots with one on goal as well.
Both goalkeepers had 90 minutes of scoreless play as Lainey Garbarz stopped two shots through the 94:29 she played and Meta Fischer for PNW had nine through regulation. Both teams had close chances in the second half as the Pride had a shot just miss off the crossbar, which kicked back to L. Garbarz as she dove on top of it. Later on, Bajis controlled the ball in the 18 box and delivered a strike to the bottom left which was saved by the foot of the Purdue Northwest defender, Rokaya Ajami, before it crossed the line.
With a 0-0 tie after 90 minutes, the teams got set for extra time. Two 10-minute periods followed by penalty kicks if needed. The first team to score wins. Halfway through the first extra time period, a cross was deflected out of play for a SVSU corner kick. Strong delivered the cross off the corner and Jaidyn Veldhouse's header went off the cross bar and in for the winning goal in the 95th minute.
Up Next: Saginaw Valley women's soccer heads to Northern Michigan Friday, November 15 for the GLIAC Semifinal round. The Cardinals will play the winner of Grand Valley State and Parkside which is set for 5:00 PM EST today (Tuesday, November 12). As the first seed, the Wildcats play host for the final three matches of the GLIAC tournament.
