Cardinal close regular season with 1-0 loss to Timberwolves

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team concluded the 2021 spring regular season with a road matchup against rival Northwood University Saturday in Midland, Mich.

The Cardinals failed to find the net for a third consecutive contest but the SVSU defense kept the game tied until late. Northwood found the game-winner in the 87th minute to escape with a 1-0 victory.

The loss finishes the regular season for the Cardinals with a record of 2-6 overall and in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Northwood outshot SVSU 13-6, while Alyssa Watts made four saves in the net for the Cardinals. Gabby Green and Andrea Lopez each recorded two shots to lead the SVSU offense.

The Timberwolves broke through on a goal from Jessica Piper on a breakaway up the middle of the field with just over three minutes remaining on the clock.

SVSU will be the No. 8 seed in the 2021 GLIAC Tournament and will travel to take on No. 1 seed Ferris State University in the quarterfinals at 4 pm Tuesday in Big Rapids, Mich.
