Women's Soccer drops regional matchup versus Walsh, 1-0

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- In a rematch of the first round of the 2018 NCAA Division II Tournament, the Women's Soccer team hosted the Walsh University Cavaliers on Thursday (Sep. 12) in a regional matchup. Walsh was able to get a goal in the 26th minute of the contest and keep the Cards off the board, taking a 1-0 victory.

The first 45 minutes of action went scoreless until the 25:13 marker when Walsh's Hannah Bowman found the back of the net to put the score at 1-0. That count held true until the halftime break.

SVSU out-shot Walsh by a 7-5 margin in the first half, with two of those shot being on goal. The Cavaliers had two shots on goal, with the one finding the goal.

The Cardinals out-shot the Cavaliers by a 10-4 margin in the second half as well, ending up ahead in that category 17-9.

Walsh, however, was able to keep SV off the scoreboard for the duration, closing-out for the clean sheet and the victory.

From Head Coach Michael O'Neill...

"It was a very frustrating game for us today, as we executed the game plan to a 'T' but just failed to capitalize off the chances that we created. We knew we would see large spells of possession and we set out to be patient while also looking for areas to probe and create in the attacking third. Unfortunately, we come away from this game empty-handed but credit to Walsh for being organized and tough to break down. We will have to regroup for Sunday, as we face a good Fairmont State side."

Up Next...

Saginaw Valley hosts Fairmont State on Sunday (Sep. 15) afternoon in another home contest. The teams will square-off at 1:00 p.m. at SVSU's Braddock Field.
