#22 SVSU Second Half Efforts Fall Short in 3-2 Loss Against MTU

UNIVERSITY CENTER — The Saginaw Valley State Women's Soccer team fell just short of the MTU Huskies 3-2 Friday afternoon after a solid second half performance from Cardinals. SVSU falls to 10-3-2 overall, 4-2-1 in conference play. The Huskies head to a 8-5-1 record, 3-4-0 in GLIAC play. 

Michigan Tech posted two goals in the first half of the contest at the 28' and 43' mark of play. This was the only the second time this season the Cardinals trailed by two goals at the halftime break. 

The Huskies and Cardinals both took 11 shots in the first half, but MTU would lead but putting five of those on the goal while SVSU only earned a solo shot on net. 

In the first five minutes of the half, Michigan Tech earned yet another goal to go up 3-nil on the Cards, but Saginaw Valley was not ready to give up just yet. 

At the 61' mark, SVSU's senior forward Mallory Hestwood found the back of the net from about 20 yards back using a helper from Valentina Giambanco. This was Hestwood's first goal of the season. 

Giambanco then responded to earn the final goal of the contest at the 77' of action with an assist from Molly Vanderhoff. This was her eighth goal of the season and she currently leads the Cardinal leaderboard and is tied for third overall in the GLIAC

The Cardinals did not earn another goal for the remainder of the contest even after outshooting the Huskies 8-3 in the final half. Michigan Tech takes the contest against the Cardinals 3-2.

Inside the boxscore: 

  • Alyssa Watts (L, 10-3-2) took the loss for the Cardinals while posting four saves. 
  • Amy Babon, Hestwood, Lindsay Stroebel and Vanderhoff each had three shots. 
  • Giambanco had five shots, one goal and one assist. 
  • Hestwood earned her first goal for her senior campaign. 
  • Vanderhoff earned her sixth assist of the season. 
  • SVSU outshot MTU 19-14
