#16 Cardinals Draw in Regional Action Versus Maryville, 1-1

ST. LOUIS, Missouri — The SVSU Cardinal Women's Soccer team concluded their pre-conference matchups with a regional tilt against Maryville University. Saginaw Valley played solid throughout, coming away with a 1-1 draw at Maryville Field. 

Neither teams were able to find their way onto the scoreboard after 110 minutes of solid competition, as the Cardinals and Saints each posted seven shots in the first half.

In the second half, MU took the 1-0 lead after a 40 yard shot bounced over the SV goalies head. Saginaw Valley responded with a pentaly shot by Valentina Giambanco, evening the score, 1-1. 

SVSU then edged out a 7-2 in shots in the second half, but could not get another in to save the win in regulation.  

In the first overtime, Saginaw Valley posted two shots on goal, but both were stopped by Maryville's Elyse Waterhouse. 

Then, the Cardinals struggled in the second OT, never getting a shot on goal. MU earned one shot, but  Alyssa Watts would stop the goal. 

SVSU concluded the contest with their first tie of the season, 1-1. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Giambanco earned the only goal for the Cardinals and posted two shots on goal. 
  • Amy Babon and Lindsay Stroebel each added two shots on goal, as well.
  •  Molly Vanderhoff had the other only shot on goal for SVSU
  • Alyssa Watts (3-0-1) saw her fourth action between the posts for Saginaw Valley, earning six saves on the record books.

"Maryville are a good team and gave us as good as they got. It was a game with a lot of momentum swings and chances at either end. I am proud of the group for once again staying the course and getting themselves back in the game. There is a lot of fight in this group and it has put us in a good position as we enter conference play."

Up Next...

SVSU will return home for the opening weekend of GLIAC play against Ferris State on Friday, Sept. 14, at noon. The Bulldogs are currently on a three game winninng streak and are fourth in the conference rankings.
