UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Lady Cardinals returned to Braddock Field on Sunday (Oct. 23) to complete their season series with GLIAC foe No. 2-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers. GVSU would score three goals in 20 mintues to take down the Cardinals and complete the season sweep.
The Cardinals came out with two early scoring chances in the first seven minutes of the match. The Lakers were able to stave the attack from SVSU by scoring the first goal one minute later. GVSU junior forward Gabriella Mencotti carried the ball past SVSU's Abby Divozzo to give GVSU the 1-0 lead. The opening tally was her league-leading 21st goal of the season.
SVSU nearly tied the game at one as Lindsay Stroebel's shot from 18 yards out rattled off the post. The Lakers then came down the field with the ball only to see Kendra Stauffer score off a deflection 12 yards out. Her 12th goal of the season gave the Lakers a 2-0 lead.
Stauffer pushed GVSU's lead to three at the 20 minute mark. She received a pass from Marti Corby and beat Divozzo from 18-yards out for her second goal of the match.
SVSU held the Lakers in check after the three miscues and closed out the first half down 3-0 to the No. 2-ranked Lakers.
The Cardinals entered the second half poised to erase a three goal deficit. Jennifer Muanamputu gave SVSU a great chance off a shot from 15 yards out in the 59th minute. Ashley Henderson made her bid for the first Cardinal goal at the 72nd minute. Her shot was stopped by GVSU's Jennifer Steinaway, who finished the match with five saves.
GVSU picked up their goalkeeper with another goal in the 82nd minute as Jayma Martin ripped a shot from inside six yards past Divozzo. The goal assured the Lakers of the 4-0 win and their place atop the GLIAC standings.
