UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University hosted the Michigan Tech Huskies on Friday (Oct. 7) afternoon in a GLIAC women's soccer matchup. The Lady Cardinals out-shot Michigan Tech 19-14 but two early goals in the first 10 minutes of the match hleped the Huskies grab a 2-1 victory at Braddock Field.
Michigan Tech got the scoring started just three minutes into the match when defender Jessica Splittgerber would connect with forward Jacqueline Mielke just outside the six-yard box.
The visitors were able to get the second goal just three minutes later, as Taylor Archibald beat goalkeeper Clare Spleth on a cross field shot for her first goal of the season. After the second goal allowed, the Cardinals toughened up the defensive front and asserted themselves as the offensive threat. Saginaw Valley would only allow three shots the remainder of the half after allowing four in 11 minutes, compared to SV's 10.
Saginaw Valley would strike back in the 38th minute of the match, as Molly Vanderhoff carried the ball towards the Michigan Tech goal and went high on the keeper for her third goal on the season. Vanderhoff would put one more shot on net as time expired in the first 45 mintues with SV down 2-1.
Both teams would continue a fast pace of play early in the second half, as they combined for seven shots in the first 15 minutes. Saginaw Valley had several chances in the middle portion of the half to tie the game at two. Jennifer Muanamputu rifled a ball from outside the 18-yard box which floated just right of the MTU goal in the 78th minute. Ashley Henderson missed on a shot in close following a corner kick in the 81st minute of the match and was one of the best chances Saginaw Valley had in the second half.
Clare Spleth made three saves in the match, including a save diving to her right in the 80th minute from Michigan Tech's Katri Studtmann to keep the score, 2-1.
Saginaw Valley was unable to find the back of the net and dropped the match to the Huskies.

- Vanderhoff and Henderson led the Lady Cardinals with six shots in the match. Vanderhoff hadfour shots on goal, including her third goal of the season, with Henderson throwing three on net.
- SVSU has fired 200 shots so far this season, which ranks second among all GLIAC teams.
- SVSU posted a 19-14 edge in overall shots, putting nine on goal compared to Michigan Tech's five.
