UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Coming off a tough loss on Friday night at GVSU, the Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team bounced-back with another big regional win, notching a 3-0 shutout victory over the Ferris State University Bulldogs on Sunday (Sep. 18) afternoon at Braddock Field.
Saginaw Valley got the first goal from Mallory Hestwood at the 7' mark, when she put a left foot on a loose ball in the box and tucked it past the Bulldog goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
Just under five minutes later at the 12' marker, Shelby Watts weaved her way through the Ferris defense, finding the back of the net and pushing the lead out to 2-0 for the home team.
Towards the end of the opening period at the 42' marker, Sakura Bals added a third goal for the Cards. She used a feed from Molly Vanderhoff to make the score 3-0, which is where it remained heading to halftime.
The would be all the scoring for the game, as the teams played the final 45 minutes to a scoreless draw, and SVSU closed-out for its fifth shutout victory of the season.
Inside the Boxscore
- Hestwood's goal was her first of the season and second of her career.
- Watts's goal was also her first of the 2016 campaign, as she now has five points with her three assists.
- Bals now has a pair of goals for the season after her late first period score.
- Vanderhoff's helper was her second of the season.
- Claire Spleth (6-1-0) posted her fourth solo shutout of the season behind a solid SVSU defense. She stopped both shots on goal she faced in her 90 minutes between the posts.
- The Lady Cardinals posted a 10-5 overall edge in shots and 7-2 mark in shots on goal.

"It was a positive result for us and a good way to end regional play. However, we know we weren't at our best and, in fairness to FSU, it wasn't a 3-0 game. I think Friday's game against GV took a lot out of us, as the girls looked a little off the pace. It's a sign of a good team though when you win with a sub-par performance. We will recover and re-focus for the start of GLIAC play Friday at Findlay."

Saginaw Valley hits the road to Ohio to play a couple of league matches this upcoming weekend. First on slate is a Friday (Sep. 23) contest at the University of Findlay. First kick is set for 4:00 p.m. SVSU will then play at Ohio Dominican Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
