Lady Cardinals Fall On Last Second Goal At Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team fell on a last-second shot in the opening round of the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Soccer Tournament to Michigan Tech.

After a hard-fought contest that was scoreless through regulation and the first overtime, the Huskies scored a goal with only one second remaining in the second overtime session to claim the 1-0 victory.

Michigan Tech out-shot the Cardinals in the first two periods by counts of 11-3 and 17-4, respectively.

As the game entered overtime tied, 0-0, the Huskies put up two shots and the Cardinals fired one at goal, but neither side capitalized on the opportunities.

The contest would enter a second overtime period with the sme scoreless deadlock.  It appeared as though the match was headed towards penalty kicks for a decision on which team would advance, but Tech's Lindsey Van Rooy found the back of the net from 25 yards out for the victory with just one second left on the game clock.

Saginaw Valley managed eight shots in the contest and three shots on goal.  The Huskies put-up 33 shots, 16 being put on goal.

Sophomore goal keeper Kailey Naumcheff was outstanding in goal on the afternoon for SVSU.  Naumcheff stopped 15 of 16 shots that came her way in just under 110 minutes of action.

Freshman Jennifer Goethals, sophomore Presley Tibbetts and junior Lindsey Arnett had the Cardinals' only shots on goal for the match.

SVSU finishes its 2013 campaign with a 7-9-1 overall record.  The Lady Cardinals were the #7 seed in the tournament after finishing the conference schedule with a 5-7 record.

The team welcomes back a vast majority of its roster for the 2014 campaign, as it graduates just three seniors from this year's squad.
