UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team hosted the University of Findlay Oilers in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matchup this afternoon (Oct. 31).
The match featured some tough playing conditions, as a steady rain throughout the day made for a difficult playing surface for both teams.
The Cardinals got off to a quick start in the contest, scoring three goals inside of the first 15 minutes to grab a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Presley Tibbetts used a feed from freshman Jennifer Goethals to score her first goal of the season just 6:24 into the match, making the score 1-0.
Goethals got into the scoring action herself just four and a half minutes later, as the freshman scored her seventh goal of the season at the 11:06 mark, extending the lead to a two goal advantage.
Freshman Ashley Henderson found the back of the net with her team-leading ninth goal at the 13:53 marker off another assist from Goethals. That made the score 3-0 in the Cardinals' advantage.
Findlay would cut into the deficit with a goal of its own, as Sarah Silone scored at the 19:20 mark in the first period.
The 3-1 score would remain at halftime, as SVSU held a 13-7 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes. Findlay held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks for the first half.
Neither team was able to add another goal in the second period, as the Cardinals closed-out the match for the 3-1 victory.
Saginaw Valley finished the game with a 25-12 edge in total shots.
Sophomore Kailey Naumcheff stopped five of six shots on goal to claim the win in goal for the Cards.
SVSU improves to 6-8-1 overall and 4-7-0 in the GLIAC while Findlay falls to 7-8-2 overall and 3-6-2 in league play. The squad returns to action on Saturday in a home match against Tiffin. Game time is set for noon at Braddock Field.
