Goethals Leads Cardinals To 3-0 Victory Over Walsh

CANTON, Ohio - The SVSU women's soccer team rebounded from a tough loss Friday at Malone to post a 3-0 shutout today (Sept. 22) at Walsh University.

It didn't take long for the Cardinal offense to get going.  Just 16 seconds into the contest, freshman Jennifer Goethals (Rochester, Mich./Rochester HS) notched her second goal of 2013 to give SVSU the early 1-0 lead.

Just over eight minutes later, senior Shelby Wright (Fishers, Ind./Fishers HS) took a rebound at the top of the box and knocked it past Cavalier goalie Michaella Stucky.  That extended the SVSU lead to 2-0 just 8:50 into the game.

The two squads would enter halftime with the score remaining 2-0 in the favor of Saginaw Valley.

Only 35 seconds into the second period the Cardinals struck again.  Junior Kelsey Burt (Marengo, Ohio/Highland HS) found the back of the net with her second score of the season.  Goethals had a hand in the goal as well, posting her team-high third assist of the year.

Sophomore Kailey Naumcheff (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) was a rock in goal for SVSU, stopping all four shots on goal that came her way.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 3-2-1 overall in 2013 and 1-1 in the GLIAC.  The Cavaliers fall to 3-3 and 0-2 in league play after the defeat.

SVSU is off until Friday (Sept. 27), when it plays host to the nationally #1-ranked conference rival Grand Valley State University Lakers.  The game is set to begin at 2:00 pm.
