Lady Cardinals Defeat Vulcans 2-1 In Double Overtime

Greeneville, Tenn. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team evened its record at 1-1 for the 2013 season after winning its second match at the Tusculum Kickoff Tournament today (Sept. 8).

After dropping a close 1-0 contest to the University of North Alabama yesterday (Sept. 7),Ashley Henderson the Cardinals defeated the University of California (Pa.) by a 2-1 score in double-overtime.

Saginaw Valley grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 24:48 marker in the first period as senior Shelby Wright (Fishers, Ind./Fishers HS) scored off an assist from freshman Ashley Henderson (Southgate, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS).  It was Henderson's first-career helper.

The Vulcans responded quickly to tie the contest at one goal-apiece just under three minutes later, as Kaili Smith snuck a free kick by SVSU sophomore goalkeeper Kailey Naumcheff (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS).

The match would remain scoreless through the second period and first overtime session, as neither team could capitalize on an opportunity.

It wasn't until the 107:57 mark in the second overtime period that the freshman connection of Henderson and Jennifer Goethals (Rochester, Mich./Rochester HS) hooked-up for the game-winner.  It was Henderson's first-career goal and Goethals' first-career assist.

Naumcheff was solid in goal, stopping six of the seven shots on goal she faced in the contest.  It was her first collegiate victory in net.

SVSU gets a break before traveling to Northwood University on Friday (Sept. 13) for a 4:00 pm matchup with the Timberwolves.
