Saginaw Valley Defeats Tiffin, 3-2

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team picked up its third GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conferference) win today (Sept. 17) when they defeated Tiffin University, 3-2.

The Cardinals came out strong taking the early lead at the 25:47 mark when freshman Emily Wheat (Flint, Mich. / Kearsley HS) scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from Lara English (Charlotte, Mich.)  Saginaw Valley took a two goal advantage when sophomore Charley Porter (Midland, Mich.) netted a goal late in the first half of play.  Tiffin scored one goal to make the contest 2-1 heading into halftime.

The Dragons tied the game at two at the 60:52 mark, but Saginaw Valley would answer back with just ten minutes left in the match up.  Sophomore Kayla Johnston (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill HS) found the back of the net off a pass from Porter to make the game 3-2.

The Cardinal defense along with goaltender Anne Berschbach (Algonac, Mich.) kept Tiffin to only seven shots on goal.  Saginaw Valley capitalized on all three of their shots on goal in the contest.

With the win the Cardinals improve to 4-1-1 overall on the season, and 3-0-1 in the GLIAC, while Tiffin falls to 3-3-0 overall on the season, and 2-2-0 in the GLIAC.  Saginaw Valley will be back in action on Sunday (Sept. 19) when they face Findlay for another GLIAC match up.  Game time is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
