Saginaw Valley Defeats Northwood for GLIAC Win, 3-1

Saginaw Valley Defeats Northwood for GLIAC Win, 3-1

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team tabbed their first GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) contest win of the season today (Sept. 8) by defeating Northwood, 3-1.

The Cardinals took the early lead going up 2-0 when sophomore Kristen Tomczyk (Lapeer, Mich.) found the foot of sophomore Kayla Johnston (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill HS) at the 10:44 mark.  Just 2:59 later sophomore Charley Porter (Midland, Mich.) passed the ball to senior Kaysie Morand (Kawkawlin, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) who shot the ball into the lower right corner of the goal.  Saginaw Valley took the 2-0 lead into halftime.

The Timberwolves came out strong the second half when they put in one goal to make the score 2-1.  The Cardinals regained the two goal lead again as Johnston would free kick and find Tomczyk for the goal.  Saginaw Valley defense along with junior goalie Anne Berschbach (Algonac, Mich.) fought hard to keep the Timberwolves off their game, allowing only four shots on goal the entire contest.

With the win the Cardinals improve to 2-1 overall on the season, and 1-0 in the GLIAC, while Northwood falls to 1-1 overall on the season, and 0-1 in the GLIAC.  Saginaw Valley will return to action when they travel home to face Ferris State in a GLIAC match-up.  The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00pm.
