MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State
University women’s soccer team opened the 2009 Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) season with a 4-3 win
over Northwood University today (Sept. 13).
The Cardinals took the early 1-0 advantage when Samantha Echols
(Walled Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake HS) found the back of the net at
the 13:03 mark. Northwood would take a 2-1 lead, before Jaclyn Barrett
(Williamston, Mich. / Williamston HS) could find the net again for
the Cardinals to knot the score at 2-2. Echols would add her second
goal of the game at the 64:55 mark to give the Cardinals a 3-2
advantage, and would add an insurance goal at 68:27 to extend the
lead to 4-2. The Timberwolves would add a goal at 77:49 to cut the
gap to 4-3 but the SVSU defense would be able to hold on from there
for the win.
With the win the Cardinals move to 4-1 overall on the season and
1-0 in the GLIAC, while Northwood falls to 3-2 overall on the
