UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley women’s
soccer team defeated Ferris State University 5-0 today (Oct 2) in a
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match
up.
The Cardinals opened up the scoring in the 37th minute of the game
when sophomore Samantha Echols
(Walled Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake HS) found the back of the net off
a pass from senior Renee Privette (Port
Huron, Mich. / Port Huron HS). Senior Jaclyn Barrett
(Williamston, Mich. / Williamston HS) would extend Saginaw
Valley’s lead to 2-0 on an assist from Echols. Barrett would
add her second goal in the 61st minute of the contest. Just minutes
later freshman Megan Morad (South
Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon HS) extended the Cardinal’s lead to
4-0 off a pass from Privette. Freshman Allison
Mandsfield (Haslett, Mich. / Haslett HS) netted her first
career goal in the 89th minute to finalize the score, 5-0.
The Cardinal defense once again played tough allowing only six
shots on goal all of which goalkeeper Anne Berschbach
(Algonac, Mich. / Algonac HS) was able to save. The shutout was the
team’s seventh of the season and Berschbach increases her
scoreless streak to 553 minutes.
With the win Saginaw Valley improves to 8-1-1 overall on the
season, and 5-0-1 in the GLIAC while Ferris State falls to 1-7-1
overall on the season, and 1-6-0 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals will
return to action on Sunday Oct. 4 at 12:00 pm when they will host
Grand Valley.
