UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw
Valley State University women’s soccer team defeated Ashland
4-0 today (Sept. 27) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (GLIAC) match-up.
The Cardinals found the back of the goal early, when senior Renee Privette
(Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron HS) netted her second goal of the
season on an assist by senior captain Jaclyn Barrett
(Williamston, Mich. / Williamston HS) in the 13th minute. Barrett
earned her second assist in the match when she connected with
teammate Cassidy
Lay (Monroe, Mich. / Monroe HS) who found the back of the net
to put Saginaw Valley up 2-0. The Cards depth started to show in
the 70th minute when junior Kaysie Morand
(Kawkawlin, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) assisted freshman Megan Morad (South
Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon HS) to Saginaw Valley’s third goal
on the day. To put the game away Morand assisted freshman Kayla Johnston
(Livonia, Mich. / Churchill HS) to the Cards fourth and final goal
of the afternoon.
The Cardinal defense once again played tough allowing only three
shots on goal all of which goalkeeper Anne Berschbach
(Algonac, Mich. / Algonac HS) was able to save. The shutout was the
team’s sixth of the season and Berschbach increases her
scoreless streak to 463 minutes.
With the win the Cardinals’ improve to 7-1-1 overall on the
season and 4-0-1 in the GLIAC, while Ashland falls to 3-6-1 overall
on the season and 0-4 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley returns to play
on Friday (Oct. 2) when they host Ferris State at 4:00pm.
