Cardinals Defeat Ashland 4-0

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women’s soccer team defeated Ashland 4-0 today (Sept. 27) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match-up.

The Cardinals found the back of the goal early, when senior Renee Privette (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron HS) netted her second goal of the season on an assist by senior captain Jaclyn Barrett (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston HS) in the 13th minute. Barrett earned her second assist in the match when she connected with teammate Cassidy Lay (Monroe, Mich. / Monroe HS) who found the back of the net to put Saginaw Valley up 2-0. The Cards depth started to show in the 70th minute when junior Kaysie Morand (Kawkawlin, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) assisted freshman Megan Morad (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon HS) to Saginaw Valley’s third goal on the day. To put the game away Morand assisted freshman Kayla Johnston (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill HS) to the Cards fourth and final goal of the afternoon.

The Cardinal defense once again played tough allowing only three shots on goal all of which goalkeeper Anne Berschbach (Algonac, Mich. / Algonac HS) was able to save. The shutout was the team’s sixth of the season and Berschbach increases her scoreless streak to 463 minutes.

With the win the Cardinals’ improve to 7-1-1 overall on the season and 4-0-1 in the GLIAC, while Ashland falls to 3-6-1 overall on the season and 0-4 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley returns to play on Friday (Oct. 2) when they host Ferris State at 4:00pm.
