Saginaw Valley State University Interim Director of Athletics, Angela Pohl, announced the selection of Cait Gaitley as the inaugural head coach of the Cardinal women's lacrosse program that is set to begin competition in the Spring of 2025. Gaitley begins her duties with SVSU on July 24, 2023.
"We are thrilled to welcome Cait Gaitley as the inaugural head coach of our Cardinal women's lacrosse program, said Pohl. "In our national search, it was important to identify an energetic leader that had Midwest ties, an understanding of lacrosse in this region, as well as enthusiasm for the challenge of building a program from the ground up. We are confident that Cait brings all the attributes necessary to build, develop, and propel this exciting new program forward."
Gaitley joins the SVSU athletic staff after a stint with NCAA Division I Detroit Mercy, where she fulfilled the role of assistant coach. While with the Titans, Gaitley had a direct role in the recruiting process as well as operations with planning transportation, accommodations, and meals for the team's travel along with being the team's offensive coordinator.
Prior to coaching at UMD, she was the head coach for Grosse Pointe North High School from 2019 to 2022 and the Triumph Lacrosse Club U16 team in 2017.
"I want to thank Angela Pohl for entrusting me with the creation of a championship program here at SVSU," stated Gaitley. "After coming on campus and meeting with the athletics staff, the excitement and support for the addition of women's lacrosse here was apparent. As the sport continues to grow, I look forward to cultivating a culture that redefines the meaning of success and reflects hard work, dedication, and respect. I am actively working to create a solid roster for our 24-25 inaugural season and plan to come out fast and strong."
Gaitley is very familiar with the sport of women's lacrosse in the state of Michigan as her playing days were at NCAA Division III Albion College from 2014-18 where she was a first-team all-conference honoree for three seasons and helped the team earn two conference championships.
She finished her career second in school history with 202 points and 179 goals. Her 60 goals during her junior and senior season rank third in program history. She set a school record for goals in a game with 10 against Olivet and received Albion's Athletic Achievement Award for her performance during her final season.
