Women’s Golf Advances to Semifinals but Falls to Davenport

AUGUSTA, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's golf program improved on Saturday in the second day of the GLIAC Championships at Stonehedge Golf Club North in Augusta, Michigan. The Cardinals shot 308 as a team, four strokes under their first round, to move up to third before falling to Davenport in match play in the semifinals.

Megan Thiravong and Brook Herbstreit both shot 74 in round two as Thiravong finished fourth and Herbstreit finished fifth out of 43 golfers. Sydney Wesson shot 77 and Megan Kozlowski shot 83 to round out the team scoring. Mandy Ehrlich rounded out play for the Cardinals with a round two of 89. The round of 308 along with the score of 312 in round one put SVSU two strokes ahead of Ferris State and gave them the three seed for the semifinals.

In match play, Saginaw Valley competed against Davenport. The Cardinals lost three of the five matches to the Panthers. Thiravong shot a 74 against Robinson who shot 80 and Wesson shot 77 against Walker's 79 for the two Cardinal wins. Kozlowski fell to Gerding shooting 79 to her 76. Herbstreit shot 81 and lost to Gervais's 79. The final match was Ehrlich's round of 87 beaten out by Meloche's 77.

In stroke play, the Cardinals finished third of eight teams in pars with 99 and second in birdies with 15. Herbstreit and Kozlowski shot one over on par threes which tied them with three others for second best. Wesson was tied for second best on par fours as she and two others shot even. Thiravong was fourth overall with 25 pars, two behind the leader. Wesson and Herbstreit had four birdies each with Kozlowski and Thiravong posting three.

Ranked 16th in the east region, SVSU women's golf awaits the official NCAA Tournament selection announcement set for later this month.
