Cardinals Fall Short Against Michigan Tech

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball program hosted Michigan Tech Saturday afternoon for their second to last home game of the regular season. The Cardinals (9-18, 6-11 GLIAC) fell to the Huskies (14-10, 10-6 GLIAC) with a final score of 70-58.

SVSU was led by the Meijer Player of the Game, Megan McCalla, who put up a career-high 18 points shooting 6-9. Aleshia Jones was the other Cardinal in double figures with 15 points along with a team-high five rebounds shared with Saniaa Walker. Walker produced defensively with her rebounds along with a career-high five steals. Saginaw Valley had a good defensive game forcing 17 turnovers from Michigan Tech and tallied 10 steals.

MTU took an early lead with a 5-0 run before the first Cardinal bucket came from Jessica Massey to make it 5-2. Michigan Tech extended the lead with a 7-0 run, before momentum shifted with a Walker bucket plus the and-one. The three points from Walker aided an 11-2 run for SVSU which was capped off by an Emma Dziezgowski three to make it 14-13. The Huskies ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to take an eight-point lead into the second.

A 7-2 run to start the next frame extended the Michigan Tech lead to 13. Saginaw Valley responded with a 9-2 run coming off another Dziezgowski three along with a three pointer from McCalla and a free throw cutting the lead to six. The Huskies scored six of the last nine points of the half with Tyler Scheid draining a three late in the second.

Jones cut into the nine-point lead to start the third with a three before a 6-0 run for Michigan Tech pushed the lead back to double digits. Both teams traded points as MTU held the 48-35 lead late in the quarter. The Cardinals ended the third on a 5-2 run with all five coming from McCalla including a layup and three from the charity stripe.

Another 5-2 run all from McCalla started the fourth leaving Michigan Tech up 55-45. McCalla made two more layups along with four from the line for Massey as SVSU kept pace with MTU. Jones made a layup and two free throws down the stretch to pull the Cardinals within seven, but a 6-0 run for the Huskies put them up 70-57. Jones scored the final point of the game with a late free throw leaving Michigan Tech with the 70-58 victory.

Women's basketball has one final game of the 2023-24 regular season as they host Wayne State next Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM on March 2 from O'Neill Arena.
