Cardinals Outpaced by Rangers

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball program fell on the road against the Parkside Rangers Saturday afternoon with a final score of 80-57. The Cardinals (6-15, 3-8 GLIAC) forced 24 turnovers and accumulated 14 steals against Parkside (12-7, 7-4 GLIAC).

SVSU was led by Lydia Meredith with 10 points, seven rebounds, and tied for most steals with Saniaa Walker with four. The steals tie Walker's career-high and is a mark she's hit six times. Meredith also accounted for two of the five Cardinal blocks. Victoria Stafford had nine points and Emma Dziezgowski and Megan McCalla both had seven.

Parkside started with a 4-2 lead before McCalla hit a three to put SVSU up by one. The Rangers started to pull away early with a 7-0 run. McCalla, Walker, and Lauren Sollom all hit shots to tie the game at 11-11 before a 9-3 run for UWP including a Sollom three put the Rangers ahead 20-14 after the first quarter.

The threes continued to fall for Parkside extending their lead to 26-18. Stafford, Jessica Massey, and Meredith made layups along with one shot from the charity stripe by Sollom brought the game within six. A 7-0 Ranger run pushed the lead to double digits before two free throws by Dziezgowski and a Meredith layup ended the first half with SVSU down 38-29.

An 11-2 stretch for UWP started the third quarter putting SVSU down 49-31. The teams traded five points each as SVSU got two points from Dziezgowski and a three from Tyler Scheid. A 6-0 run cut into the lead a bit as Meredith hit a three and three points from the charity stripe. Another 5-0 run for the Cardinals at the end of the quarter left Parkside up 64-49.

The Rangers started the final quarter with an 8-3 run before five unanswered points by the Cardinals reduced the lead to 15. An 8-0 run for Parkside ended the game with the Rangers winning by 23.

Cardinal women's basketball comes back home after the loss. They host Davenport Thursday at O'Neill Arena with tip-off set for 6:00 PM.
