Cardinals Slide Against Top Ranked Grand Valley

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball program got back on the road as they traveled to the west side of the state to face the #1 ranked Grand Valley State Lakers Thursday night. The Cardinals fell with a final score of 76-38.

SVSU was led by Lydia Meredith with eight points shooting 2-for-5 from the floor and 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Meredith also came down with four rebounds to lead the team. Victoria Stafford and Aleshia Jones both scored seven in front of Lauren Sollom with six. Rounding out the scoring was Jessica Massey and Tyler Scheid with four points each and Saniaa Walker with two.

Saginaw Valley jumped out front early with a jumper by Jones and a three by Stafford for the 5-0 lead. Grand Valley charged back with a 7-0 run to take the lead. Stafford and Meredith both made a bucket along with a Laker to tie the game at 9-9 before a 13-2 run for GVSU closed out the first quarter.

The Lakers extended their lead in the second starting with a 7-2 run. Sollom drained a three before a 9-1 run for Grand Valley pushed the lead to 38-17. Scheid hit a three along with two free throws from Meredith to cut into the lead before the half.

After the break, a 6-0 run for Grand Valley forced a timeout by Saginaw Valley. The Cardinals came out firing after the timeout with a 10-1 run getting two free throws from Massey and Meredith followed by a layup by Walker and two jumpers by Jones. SVSU cut the lead to 45-32 before GVSU used a 7-0 run to push the lead back to 20 before the final ten minutes.

Another 6-0 run for the Lakers pushed the pace in the fourth. Saginaw Valley got a free throw from Jones and a layup by Stafford during a 13-3 run by Grand Valley as the lead bloomed to 71-35. Sollom stopped the drought with a layup before GVSU scored the next five points. Sollom ended the scoring with a free throw in the last seconds of the game as the clock hit zero with the score 76-38 Grand Valley.

After the loss, Saginaw Valley women's basketball moves to 4-11 overall and 1-4 in the GLIAC. With the inclement weather coming across the state of Michigan, the Cardinals next game at Davenport has been moved from Saturday, January 14 to Sunday, January 15. Tip-off is still scheduled for 1:00 PM at the Davenport Student Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.
