Zarycki Sets Single Game Scoring Record in Dominating Win Over Panthers

UNIVERSITY CENTER, MICH. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team hosted Davenport University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday, February 18th. The Cardinals (15-11, 10-6 GLIAC) dominated the Panthers (7-19, 1-15 GLIAC) on both ends of the floor all night long.

Kaitlyn Zarycki scored 44 points in the commanding win, setting a new single-game scoring record. Every member of the team was able to find the bottom of the bucket, while four players scored double-digits. SVSU shot 63% from the floor, propelling them to the 104-59 win over Davenport.

The game got off to a hot start for SVSU with Tyler Scheid winning the tip and then making a backdoor cut for an opening layup. On the next possession, the Cardinals forced a 10-second count in the backcourt allowing for an opening 17-2 run. While the women's team outscored Davenport 25-13 in the first, the highlights happened on the defensive end of the floor with the Cardinals forcing 11 turnovers in the opening frame. Freshman, Lauren Sollom capped off the defensive showcase by ending the quarter with a block to hold the lead at 12.

A three-point barrage opened the second quarter for the Cardinals, Kaitlyn Zarycki opened with a step-back from beyond the arc and Emma Dziezgowski made another on the next possession 20 seconds later. Tyler Scheid couldn't be left out of the action and buried another just a minute later. Zarycki and Dziezgowski added to their percentage to close out the half while Zarycki went to the locker room with 27 points.

The third quarter presented continued dominance from SVSU. Tori DePerry opened the scoring with a layup to put the Cardinals up by 23. Jessica Massey answered a three-point jump shot by the panthers with an elbow jumper of her own. Kaitlyn Zarycki added to the total with a pair of free throws before Maggie Keinsley made her first bucket of the night putting the team up 25.

The final frame was one for the history books, Kaitlyn Zarycki added to her superb night dropping 11 points in the fourth. Zarycki hit a three-point jump shot to tie the single-game scoring record and followed with a turnaround jumper to break it with 5:24 left to play in the contest. The team, as a whole, put up 28 points to eclipse the 100-point mark for the first time this season.
